York County is famous in history books throughout the world due to the battles at Yorktown and the eventual surrender of General Cornwallis to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. While Yorktown, along the York River still maintains a beautiful historic community as well as shops and restaurants along the waterfront the rest of the county has transformed into a beautiful bedroom community. The rest of the county is comprised of Seaford, Grafton, and Tabb, each of which has their own distinct style and feel. York County is known throughout the region for the excellent reputation of their public school system.
Because the cities and counties on the peninsula run into each other with little to no divide, you'll find that most people from York County will look for their entertainment in Newport News, Williamsburg, and Hampton.
Homes in York County tend to skew significantly more expensive than in Newport News and Hampton. You may find yourself paying $30+ more per square foot for a comparable home in York County. The reputation of the school system, lower taxes, and convenience to Langley Air Force Base, Fort Eustis, NASA, and the Shipyard all contribute to York County's higher price point. On average, the houses skew larger than in the surrounding cities, with a much smaller percentage of townhomes and condos.
