Poquoson is a small independent city, formerly part of York County, with a population of just over 12,000 people. NASA Langley Research Center as well as Langley Air Force Base are just seconds outside of Poquoson. Many people move to Poquoson who want a small town feel, while still having fast access to business, retail, and bases. Poquoson is an old Native American word meaning "Great Marsh". In real estate terms that means "flood insurance". Much of Poquoson is in a flood plain and many homes do require flood insurance. This is always a factor when purchasing a home in Poquoson, and should be researched thoroughly before writing an offer.
Homes in Poquoson are generally going to be single family, traditional style homes. Some newer construction has led to more transitional styles, but you won't see a tremendous range of housing styles in this small city. The school district has an excellent reputation and is often the driving force behind a move to Poquoson.
